Maturity

13 Apr

Tonight I heard a comment from my girlfriend in the middle of our conversation that “I’m not matured yet”. My mind suddenly uttered something that I didn’t really think before with “It’s our decision to make, not time…just like praying or fasting, we may not like to do it, indeed we decide to do it”. To be honest, it was not the first time I heard such saying “I’m not matured yet”, “I want to enjoy my young age”, “This is my time to have fun”.

What I’m saying is there is nothing wrong with having fun, I encourage it to be involved in whatever we are doing instead. The problem occurs when “fun” becomes the end, and we attached to it. We are all responsible for whatever we are doing, even to the deepest level of thinking. What we enjoy as fun, could be a suffering for someone else, as what usually lame joke does and could be a problematic end to ourselves indeed.

Then what maturity is? Personally for me, it is not just to do more right things, it is the bravery and honesty to admit that many times we are being wrong and not to fall to the same pit twice. Matured parents are able to admit that their kids might have better information about things, matured couple are able to see relationship matters clearly without the feeling of unfair judgements, matured teachers are able to improve their teaching skills by letting students surprise them with what they got. Being wrong has no feeling, realizing that we were wrong has, and it takes maturity to get through that feeling with a winner mentality and see the problem as pure as it is.

Some of you might think that this has something to do with Grand Unified Theory of physics. Yes, you are correct. We are responsible for our thinking as it might be polluting the waves within our environment. Thus we need to be aware and guard what it is doing time to time. We need to stop and take a step back of our life, analyze, realize, decide to correct the things we have done wrong, and grateful for things we do right. If we feel we are heading to the wrong direction, admit it, and make a strong commitment to correct it, and the world will help. If we feel we are heading to the right direction, ask for more support as the Unmanifested is always in ourselves, listening.

How mad we are…

21 Sep

Every single of us, falls on the spectrum of insanity in which we have a lil bit madness… Some of us are obsessed with drugs, sex, controls, foods, games, relationships, security, you name it. Others are banging their heads on the wall, some other close their eyes on the trance-music and got high just in the snap of fingers.

We all have our own dark side, none of us have the right to say that we are the right human being for other to be followed and inspired of. We put our ‘moral’ mask when we go out of our door to be accepted by our societies, wherever we are. We put the walls around us to avoid being observed by the police of moral that will judge us by our appearance, the way we walk, the way we talk, or even fire that comes trough our eyes, no matter how saturated or vivid it is.

Life is a miracle and a mystery at the same time. You’ll never know what’s inside the head of your loved ones, you can never judge the farmer of yourself until their slaughter you and at that time, it’s already too late to avoid the devastation that happened, name it physically, emotionally, or spiritually.

So maybe this is the time for us to appreciate the silent and stillness, to think peacefully of where we are, where are we going, who are our true friends on the thin and thick, or maybe just to savor the element of silent and stillness that is referred as oasis in this frenetic pace of our world today.

First Draft: Done!!!

7 Jun

One month and ten minutes. Eventually, days after days, waking up untill 3-4 o’clock in the morning, doing these papers (not THAT doing!), compiling it up, paraphrasing, analyzing, trying to make connections, and the most boring job on earth: REFERENCING!!! finally done! I feel relieved. Is it satisfying? for the first hours, yes, but now? I don’t really know what I’m gonna do. And I know, research is not my strength, my ass is not meant to be seated in front of laptop or any machines all day long, and get some money from that.

One said, that greatest dreamer’s dreams never fulfilled, it’s always transcended, it never stops. It’s never ending pursuit, rooted from the thirst of a better life, not for himself, but to see his basic loftier ambition of leaving a good legacy for other human being. For the people he loves, family, friends, and community.

I did one thing anyway, after I’ve done my first draft, which made me feel good for any longer than that one month and ten minutes of struggle, this: Seashore!

For now on, Fete de La Musique is around the corner, gotta be prepared for that. I’m thinking of using the dubstep to cover my rythm section since we dont have any drummer for any moment, much limitations on that I realized, indeed. For the end of this week, DiGi leaps coming. And right after 19th (FDLM 2011), is the time to go to meet the challenge!

I’m planning to go to Perlis, on foot, or maybe on bicycle. Lets see if I can get any lender. The mission is to understand the real culture of Malaysia during the trip, to enter the realm of South East Asian wisdom, Chinese, Indians, and Melayu are here, what can I expect more? To alleviate the discriminations (what kind of moron who are still discriminative nowadays, we’re not living in the traditional monarch world anymore. To strengthen Indonesia-Malaysia relationship. Preparation: GPS (which is tested to be not too accurate), reading materials, camera (maybe I’ll post some vlog on youtube during the trip), some clothes, toiletries and a laptop.

The Search #4 (Finale: The Psychological Characteristic of Peak Performance on Musicians)

5 May

Eventually, I found it. That will be the title of my final project paper, and hopefully it will help me to understand better about the world, the world about creative minds, the world about the immersion of thinking and feeling into the unity of lyrics, sounds, and progressions, the world of music.

I thought i would just dig in the imagery process in musicians, however, it’s gonna be hard for subjects to understands my questions later if I had to interview them, however, I’m afraid it’s gonna be too restricting for me to enlarge and compose more writing and reach more than 8000 words.

There are several problems:

1. How am i supposed to define elite musicians? and compare it to the novice? Will it be by the skills? If so, how do I know, do I have to go to music school and ask them to suggest some for me? Or will it be by the accomplishment they have made, like albums released, or the number of RBT sold, or the number  and level of concerts in a month?

2. There are only a little numbers of references in psychology of peak performance on music in the resource that I can get access from. I have several journals on my reference that should be able to retrieved right after, but where the access? Can I use other resources such popular news? Rolling Stone interviews? Youtube videos? New paradigm of research should be able to embrace the development of media and technology right?

3. I haven’t met my  lecture and I clicked the subject already, which means I only have less than three months in order to finish this project.

Well, Steve (Aerosmith) said that we should take risks, true, there’s no advancement without any movement, and risks are inherited in every movement we’ve made. We’ll never hit a target if we don’t shoot at all right? Marthin Luther King Jr. also said that we need to move, being idle wont give us anything. Here I am, moving and taking risks in the realm of unknown and uncertainty.

Seeing is believing, think positively!

The Search #3 (100 Most Influential People 2011, Time Magz)

23 Apr

Well, Instead of reading of what am i supposed to read (research journals related to my final project), i read that. The top 100 most influential people in the world, Time Magazine edition. I saw the list, cool, and I wanna read them one by one. I didn’t really knew each of them, what are they doing that they could make their name to be influential, how they changed the world.

Doesn’t matter, I love reading stories. The story about people’s struggle, their challenges, their strategy, their avenue, bloods and tears, coalitions, and their accomplishment. Yes, I did spent my time reading each of them (until this point, not all of ’em yet).

There are several similarities between them. Well, that what is taught to me to live a better world, to find similarities instead of differences. It is the way to resolve conflict also, and it will not hurt anyone to find similarities. It is usually more subtle, because deep inside, in fact, we’re all the same, and that believe, common ground, is what served me well to go through any struggle (even though there are some fight that not worth to fight for).

One, they’re giving. Yes, you hear me right, they made themselves got into that list not by overarching individual goals, it’s what they have given to the world, and what are they capable of doing in the future for the better world. I know, Justin Bieber (I read this one superbly fast) and Bruno Mars are also in that list. I’m not a fan, but hey, to be objective here, they made their way to the top, it means some people like them, some people changed and benefited by their service. People are appreciated for what they have given, not by what they have accepted.

Two, determination to use what they have. I’m not merely talking about money, wealth, fame, nor political power only. I’m talking about burning soul, they use their time effectively to reach out their dream, to make phone calls, strengthen their connection with the people who have the same dream (see Matt Damon). One thing, luck does come to the people who are ready, and opportunity often comes from someone who believe in us. It is also important to enrich the alternatives, sometimes, we never really know what we can do until someone empowered us to do so, to overlap our own limitation. Do they work hard? Yes, in their own way, and I do believe, it’s not what they call ‘work’. I do believe they enjoy what they do, they’re simply reaching out their dream.

Three, They’re brave enough to defy, yet balance enough to keep other talents stick around them. We have to admit that there are several values that we need to leave behind.  Not because it’s old and not relevant anymore, but because it’s tested to be wrong, not efficient, and not significant for the sustainable development of the world. To defy these traditions, one need’s to brave enough and having a strong ground on their feet, to have an unshakeable believe that the other virtues (it may have the same age though) are the real truth, more efficient, and more sustainable. The traditionalist may be the closest people to our live, our parents, our spouse, our community. However, instead of looking at them as threats, these people think positively to seeing them as opportunities, to check the sidelines, to be creative in their own way.

The bravery to defy traditionalist, the determination to use what they have, and the compassionate soul to the world are the virtues that I see that took them to the list. Is it impossible for us? The commoners? No, we have the right to choose our path, I do believe that. I do believe in God also, that He has his hands involved in this world. What I wanna say is simply ‘that list is not the goal, but to make a better world is’.

Thanks.

Chapter 5: Strength Develop Best in the Framework of Mission

7 Apr

Actually this is my job to summarize this book written by Clifton and Nelson called “Soar With Your Strength” for my group exam’s discussion tomorrow, which I don’t know whether will I able to come or not due to the time. However, here it is:

I like this chapter, since it’s actually wringing around the same theme as the two previous posts on my blogspot (check out Nature (N) Nurture on the blogroll). It was opened by the story of Mary Kay Ash the queen of cosmetic empire (can anyone tell me which empire? I don’t know, and too lazy to search now). That it was actually driven by her dissatisfaction over the compensation system at her previous workplace that was so gender bias towards men.

On the “The Nature of Mission” they explained that mission is a powerful quality that provides the theater for strength to perform. It is so powerful that it overlaps the importance of the worldly compensation one expects. It is not about the money, nor about the fame or power, but it is about spiritual virtues, it is about the antidote of selfishness, it is altruistic.

All must be careful, mostly on the things we read, mission statement only exists at the organizational level or famous leaders around us. Hell no, many of the top performers I know, and based on the research,  are having their personal mission. They were driven and energized by it, I have heard the same quotes which I forgot who it came from that mission (or the feel of purpose) energize the action, or else, the action will be empty and will not make any further than just get it done.

Another point: though mission seems like a spiritual avenue, it can have an impact on worldly matters. OK OK, nothing’s more, not that interesting for me, you can crave for example yourself. The point is, go over quality before we quantify the result of our business venture or personal goal.

The next point is a bit interesting, they differentiate between goals and missions. Goals defined as the steps on mission achievements. Mission has eternal quality while goals are  time bound (when it’s reached, it dies and replaced by others). Goals may be about numbers, however we never satisfy the numbers, human are meant to be resilient on pursuing their satisfaction, and I do believe that it is planted in all of us that we are made to be compassionate towards others.

This is the statements to be reflected to define our mission:

1. What is it that you believe you do that makes a difference to other people and mankind?

Put aside all the worries about logic, grammar, and its spelling. After that, do these:

1. It should be simple enough to be remembered and frequently reflected upon

2. it doesn’t need to be the actual action plan, it provides guides, not goals

3. Everyone in the organization should have the same basic commonalities on its virtue

4. Missions are allowed to grow

5, It will be an advantage to have a work that serves our own personal mission, but not everyone actually are that lucky.

Mission statements can grow out of a strong sense of responsibility or a strong sense of rage, we call the last one as displacement (it’s in one of the article dr.Mohan posted in our class’ forum). OK, understandable, I’m too lazy to elaborate on that.

Next point: talk about your mission whenever you get a chance, hmm, it’s just the same to keep ur target on your face, keep FOCUS! And I do believe too, that once you keep talking about it, you disseminate the words, and you’ll get bored by yourself, eventually you’ll find some other creative way to make other understand about your mission.  Owh, one more, you’ll get feedbacks, and it’s always good whether it’s good or bad review.

The last pages talk about mission actually gives purpose to life, it adds meaning, it’s pure, and it’s the deepest felt explanation that touches heart instead of head of why we do what we do. It gives several examples such Martin Luther King Jr. that said “I have a dream, I have a dream”, that captured the imagination of millions people’s heart and printed in the history of the world. It is one of the essential ingredients of excellence.

Jamie’s Audacious Legacy

7 Apr

This is my assignment on Entrepreneurship class, and I think it would be great to share it to the world about my take on Jamie Oliver’s story and struggle upon his believe to form a better world.

1. Introduction

I saw Jamie Oliver a couple of times on the TV and I was not that interested to his show at that time. Until I saw him giving a speech in TED, and it was TED award speech at YouTube which was uploaded at early 2010. It wasn’t about that it was broadcasted by TED nor about its award, but about the speech itself. Everyone can see his passion in his eyes, how fluent and influential he was in the speech, how he made the audience to sit at the corner of their chair and listen carefully. He was not talking about his recipe, but about his passion for a better future through his own way, through foods.

Jamie Oliver is the world-wide famous host of The Naked Chef (BBC) and several TV shows. He is known for his passion to make people enjoying their time at the kitchen, and even to grow their own food. His program is aired at more than a hundred countries, translated to more than 30 languages, and he produced the best-seller cookbooks not only in UK but also around the globe. He is the founder of Ministry of Food, a foundation with the same passion, specifically targeting people with obesity to create a bigger awareness of healthy living with the right diets.

Talking about profitability, transparency, and socially responsible Jamie has made use of his fully. He is fully responsible for several TV shows which for sure have brought him a big income and several other profitable shows like Ministry of Food foundation (a campaign for healthy diet against obesity) and Jamie’s Kitchen (a show to teach young people who were not in full time education or employment). Talking about transparency, there is little about his venture financial report in the news, however, doing project with governments and funded by them (and TED) to do social project can be perceived as trust to its cleanliness in terms of their operation to their target market. The last one is the criteria about its business sustainability, which I think is unquestionable. The background of Jamie’s Kitchen was to give back to the society, all the profits in fact, were given to the charity and it was followed by the camera. Jamie has made several other programs for his passion to get the health back to the society by his own way, and he’s proud of it.

2. Business Description

The markets he is targeting actually are the parents, who are responsible for the foods of entire family. The next one is young people as his ‘giving back’ program. Another target that he tapped into is the education system, since he believes that a better future will be created through healthy generation, and the less number of junk-food consumed by young generation today. He wants to make them realize the effect of how bad it is. The last one is government, and by tapping to this target, it means that his program, his passion, and his goal in life will be disseminated and fully supported by the legislation. Even he once said that (at TED award speech) any government, judging from the circumstances of obesity and sugar level that are consumed by kids in their schools, are found to be guilty of child abuse by agreeing on the sugar that are put on their milk. He simply put it into the closing statement of his speech there, that his target are kids, families, and people everywhere to cook again and fight obesity.

The process he puts inside the business are mostly by educating his target audience about how important it is to start to take a big care of it. He uses statistics, stories, and himself as a chef and food-expert to create an awareness of the cost of ignoring the importance of food. He does not stop there, it was not all about health, and he was talking about how food actually binds the members in the family together. Intellectual and emotional way to disseminate his passion about a better future is the strategy he puts in place, including the education to scale this out.

The USP (Unique Selling Proposition) that he proposed to the market is his own philosophy that “food and healthy eating has always been about enjoying everything in a balanced and sane way. “ He does believe that actually we don’t really need to be afraid about our diet. Yes there is sugar and bad cholesterol in our foods, yet we are able to balance them with the nutrition needed in our body, that we should eat a proportionate portion of our diet. The value adds is that once the market knows how to cook, they will know how to transform raw ingredients to the best food in an effective, cheapest, and fastest way. By cooking like this, is always be cheaper compared to buy food from outside, and it adds creativity to the market in terms of eating in a balance way with loads of variety and odds indulgence now and then for every treat, of course when treat is not a daily occurrence.

3. Personality and Situation Analysis

There could be a genetic factor playing its role in Jamie’s development. His parents, Trevor and Sally still run their own highly respected pub/restaurant The Cricketers in Clavering and was frequently found helping out in the kitchens. His fascination for food continued to grow and at 16 Jamie left school and completed his training at Westminster Catering College. After spending some time working in France, followed by a stint at Antonio Carluccio’s Neal Street Restaurant, London Jamie joined the acclaimed River Café where he worked for three and a half years alongside Rose Gray and Ruth Rogers.

However, it didn’t stop there. Jamie, as stated above, was pursuing his own way. His bold decision to quit school and later did his training in catering school was believed to be unpopular among teenage those years. He left school, the education system failed him, as it failed too many people around UK and the world, and it simply cannot tap into unseen potential on students. Anyway, later in his path, it became his own enemy, where kids nowadays can’t even focus to even more than one percent to things in front of them, and instead more focused on their gadget and look bored with their handhelds.

Having struggled academically himself (Jamie has dyslexia and left school at 16 with just two GCSEs), he now wants to help this group of young people through an intensive reintroduction to learning, with the offer of support for those who want to re-enter education, Dream School has born.

The series looks at the young people’s educational problems and attempts to uncover whether they are down to personal circumstance, society, or the education system itself. It also examines how the new teachers get on as they try to translate their real-life expertise into the realities of the classroom.

The experts include scientist Professor Robert Winston, historian David Starkey, barrister Cherie Blair, journalist and political aide Alastair Campbell, actor Simon Callow, musician Jazzie B and Olympic gold medalist Daley Thompson.

The put his audacious time to tap into those kids. The education system was again, tried to fail him down, looked down at him, by not allowing the advertisement to be aired because it was too straight forward against the chalk board-based education system which has failed enough of UK youngster and trying to hold them back in their classes. The teachers were against it, since they believe that Dream School was filled with people who are failed to survive at the ordinary education system. Given that the intake of Dream School is representative of the 50% of students who have failed to achieve five or more GCSEs at grade C or above, Brooker immediately insults half of the population, Brodie (The Guardian) said at his point against Dream School.

Considering all the facts above, all the difficulties he had gone through, and to see him eventually awarded by TED to run his altruist campaign is an inspiring journey of one’s worth admired, Jamie is believed to have an internal locus of control, by not letting the environment and failures brought him down. He instead, kept pursuing his dream, to make people enjoying their time in the kitchen, and back to the warmth of healthy family.

The source is the dissatisfaction, and yes, he made it personal. It was not about the pursuit of revenge of the dependency of the good old times employment, nor nine to five work hours. He has been independent since a long time ago, and it was not that the things that burn his soul, it is about his compassionate towards the community and his dream about a better future. Another thing is, he is lucky enough to have a pair of parents who are in the same field, to be his model, to encourage his familiarity of being an entrepreneur, a successful and passionate one.

By being clear about his vision, Jamie has his own achievement that he is trying to reach, and he keeps pursuing it. Day by day, he is into the same dream, to keep his dream alive, and yes, this is the sign of the high need of achievement. The achievement however, is defined differently from one person to another, for some, maybe it’s some recognition in national television, for some, maybe it’s financial advantage, but for Jamie, what he wants to achieve is stated clearly in his mind, as stated above, back to the warmth of healthy family.

We have to understand that risk-taking behavior is appeared at the entry point of being an entrepreneur, yet, it is not sufficient to survive the venture and amount the success for a long term. To sustain the existence of the business, one needs to know him or herself, on the other hand, still having a confident to tap into the uncertainty of the future. To have a belief in himself, and yet able to know the limitation of self, the self, the strength, the weaknesses and use the knowledge to further the development of the venture.

4. Prognosis

Martin Addison, Director of Video Arts, said:
“Jamie’s Kitchen: Fifteen lessons on leadership and teamwork takes a fresh approach to training that is totally inclusive and relates to people regardless of their position within a team. It makes compelling viewing as it charts the emotional highs and lows of what was a very ambitious project but above all it emphasizes the importance of personal contribution and motivates people to achieve their full potential.

“Organizations are already aware that leadership and teamwork skills are keys to their success. Their challenge is finding a way to change the behavior of enough people to achieve critical mass and make a real difference. We believe that the broad appeal of Jamie’s Kitchen: Fifteen lessons on leadership and teamwork will result in better leaders and better teams, which can only mean more effective organizations overall.”

The quotes above were taken from Jamie’s Kitchen’s review by the director of its program. The program is about leadership and teamwork believed to be able to create a critical mass for the future leaders. The reason behind it all is the understanding that leadership is an activity, it is not a position. Thus for one to learn about leadership, it takes a real activity, a real example of a set of behavior, hands-on experience instead of classical class-room method.

Jamie Oliver takes on this was “The biggest lesson I learnt was that each individual needs a different approach. Some learn quickly and others need a bit more time to grasp things. Some will take to one role happily while others might have to be given a little nudge. Spending time to nurture each trainee’s talent is always important“.  He said also at the other time that it is about acknowledging our strength and weaknesses, and not letting our own wants and needs get in the way of our development.

Maybe yes, the personality he has had caused by some displacement from the traditional education system, he had a dyslexia, and maybe that’s why he tries to reach out kids who are victimized by the existence education system. However, I do believe on something more powerful than just negative push behind his formed character.  It is a burning soul to reach out, to contribute to the world, based on his own internal dialogue to create a better world.

The programs above are believed as his way and lengthen hands to create a better world. To disseminate his passion, his believe, and his understanding that people are deserve to get a better life, by the warmth of the family, by the better food presented on their table, and by having more qualified leaders available within communities.

Check Jamie!

This guy is superbly passionate about his things.

He cares, he has an expertise, and he used it to build his empire, cooking empire.

I have to admit, I admire people who are doing what they love to do, and having a firm believe on themselves, and at the end, they’re able to reach the level where they can share what they believe to the world, it’s TED people! And He’s awarded.

The thing versus people

19 Feb

Let me highlight the point of people versus thing in this lecture. I like that so much, since almost everyday we see people appreciate their things more than the value of people. Some people just don’t see the value of birthday present, the value of giving to stranger, the value of being honest when the waiter gives you the price below something you should pay. Lets see from the point of transactional theory, the cost that we invest in people will be return in a way or another in a form of trust, confidence, altruism, karma. You cannot go beyond yourself untill you do something for giving instead of solely achieving, at least that what I feel. That what I felt when I met her, untill now.
